Big East battle pits Panthers against Cardinals

01/16/2010 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The red-hot Pittsburgh Panthers welcome the Louisville Cardinals to the Petersen Events Center for a Big East clash this afternoon.
Jamie Dixon's Panthers are on a major roll right now, having won seven straight games, including an eye-opening three game road trip that featured huge wins at Syracuse (82-72), Cincinnati (74-71) and most recently, Connecticut (67-57). With the wins, Pittsburgh has jumped out to a 4-0 start to league play.
Rick Pitino's Cardinals aren't far off the mark. The defending Big East champions have won three of their four conference games, although the team is coming off a disappointing 92-84 setback to fourth-ranked Villanova on Monday.
This series is tied at four games apiece, but Louisville has won both meetings in Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals converted a remarkable 39-of-45 free-throw attempts against Villanova, but it still wasn't enough in an eight-point loss. Samardo Samuels once again led the way with a team-high 21 points, thanks in large part to a perfect 13-of-13 effort from the charity stripe. Edgar Sosa poured in 17 points in support, while Peyton Siva chipped in with 12 points off the bench. Louisville led by seven points at the break, but shot just .292 from the field over the final 20 minutes to drop its first league matchup. The Cardinals possess plenty of offensive firepower, averaging 81.1 ppg. Samuels has been a beast in the frontcourt, delivering on 53.1 percent from the floor and pacing the team in both scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg). Sosa is a perfect complement with his three-point accuracy (39-of-98), leading to 13.9 ppg.
The Panthers are the opposite, using stingy defense to win games. Pittsburgh is averaging just 67.8 ppg, but that is more than enough when taking into account that the team is yielding just 57.9 ppg. Opponents are shooting just 38.6 percent from the floor, including an anemic 26.8 percent from behind the arc. The team is led by the backcourt tandem of Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker. Gibbs is shooting .419 from long range and is averaging 17.6 ppg. Wanamaker ranks second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg) and first in assists (59). Gilbert Brown has played sparingly this season, but he is netting 10.2 ppg and will be a valuable asset down the stretch. In the win over UConn, Gibbs and Wanamaker were at it again, as both players netted 19 points. Brown came off the bench with 11. Despite shooting a mere .390 from the floor, Pittsburgh won the battle on the boards (40-31) and outscored the Huskies 17-6 at the free-throw line.
