Fourth-seeded former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero avoided an upset by overcoming Argentine Horacio Zeballos 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. The match was suspended because of darkness here on Wednesday, with the players knotted at 6-6 in the second set, but its was all Ferrero, a former French Open champion, here on Thursday.
Third-seeded Gael Monfils of France moved into the round of eight with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Spanish qualifier Pablo Andujar. Monfils and his fellow top-four seeds all received byes into the second round here.
Two other second-round bouts saw Swiss Marco Chiudinelli handle speedy German wild card Bjorn Phau 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and German Florian Mayer maul Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-1.
Friday's quarterfinals will pit second-seeded French Open semifinalist Jurgen Melzer of Austria against fifth-seeded Spaniard Albert Montanes; Monfils versus Mayer; the Spanish Ferrero against German Simon Greul; and Gimeno- Traver versus Chiudinelli.
